OpenAI to Introduce Ads Across ChatGPT Services

OpenAI is preparing to roll out advertisements within its ChatGPT services, targeting users on its free tier and the newly introduced $8-per-month Go subscription tier. The ads, which will be integrated into ChatGPT‘s answers, are part of a broader strategy to expand the availability of its AI offerings while exploring new revenue streams.

Ads Tailored to Conversations

According to OpenAI, the ads will be "clearly marked" and will appear at the bottom of responses "when there’s a relevant sponsored product or service based on your current conversation." The company has emphasized that it will not show ads related to sensitive or regulated topics, such as health, mental health, or politics.

Additionally, OpenAI has outlined several safeguards for its advertising model. "The company says it won’t show ads to users who tell the chatbot they are under 18 or to users the system predicts are minors." It has also pledged not to sell user data to advertisers and to keep individual conversations private. Users will have the option to turn off ad personalization and clear the data used for ads at any time.

A New Tier Joins the Lineup

Alongside the introduction of ads, OpenAI is launching the ChatGPT Go tier, which costs $8 per month. This new membership offers significant benefits over the free tier, including 10 times the number of messages, file uploads, and image creations. It also features improved memory capabilities, allowing the system to retain more details about individual users over time.

The Go tier adds to OpenAI’s existing subscription levels, which include ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month and ChatGPT Pro at $200 per month, providing options tailored to a range of user needs and budgets.

Privacy Concerns Amid Expansion

The announcement comes on the heels of OpenAI’s introduction of a new ChatGPT Health service, which allows users to upload health data. This move has prompted privacy experts to raise concerns, given that the service is not covered by the privacy protections typically applied to health providers.

A Controlled Approach to Advertising

OpenAI’s decision to incorporate ads represents a notable shift for the company. Despite the potential for controversy, it has outlined measures to ensure transparency and maintain user trust. By limiting the scope of its ads and providing users with control over their data, OpenAI aims to balance its revenue goals with its commitment to ethical standards.

This development marks an important step in the evolution of ChatGPT, as OpenAI continues to adapt its offerings to meet user demands while navigating the challenges of privacy and responsible AI use.
